To help with efforts in curbing poaching in the region, a custom-built, high-speed Reef Sentinel will employ night detection technology so that it can effectively target illegal activity in protected marine areas. Costing $ 735,000, this vessel will be stationed on Magnetic Island and will be used by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Thanks to its state-of-the-art design and technology, the patrol vessel will be able to cover large distance at quick speeds and also provide quick turnaround time to offshore Marine Park incidents. It is equipped with over-the-horizon radar capabilities that will help locate small-to-medium-sized vessels poaching from no-take zones at night.
