Shimla is well connected by buses, and although the journey is tiresome, the view is beautiful. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation or HRTC runs a number of buses from Haridwar to Shimla, which can be booked prior to the journey online. The roads are not in a perfect condition, therefore the journey by bus could take more than 8 hours, depending on the traffic. If travelling by car, one must set out from Haridwar via NH 52 to Rishikesh, then go forward to Dehradun via NH 72; from there go to Poanta Sahib and travel from Poanta Sahib to Shimla via Sarog. Alternately, the preferred route is to go via Chandigarh, where a small stop can be taken for supplies and rest, and the journey, which is a mere 3 hours from Chandigarh, can be continued. If travelling from Chandrigarh, one should go along NH 22 to Pinjore then travel to Wakanghat, from where the journey is just one hour away.
