Akshaya Tritiya is one of the several auspicious days held in high regard in Hindu and Jain traditions. It is celebrated in the month of Vaishaka which falls between April and May of the Georgian Calendar. This year, the festival will be celebrated on May 9. Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated to mark the birth of Parsurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. Some believe that this is the day when Ved Vyas and Ganesha began writing the Mahabharata. Akshaya Tritiya is considered to be extremely auspicious and is celebrated on a grand scale in Maharashtra and most Maharashtrian households. In Maharashtra, the celebrations for Akshaya Tritiya take place primarily in individual households. It is an important day that is usually celebrated by women in Maharashtra by participating and performing in Haldi-Kumkum. Carrying out Haldi-Kumkum is one of the rituals that symbolizes marital bliss. Women pray for their husband’s long lives. Women pray to Gauri, the goddess of marital bliss. An image of the goddess is adorned with flowers and jewellery. During haldi-kumkum, the hostesses also offer various sweet dishes like karanji and  aamrass to women to visit their homes.
