Dachigam National Park in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir has been a protected area since 1910. The name literally stands for ‘ten villages,’ that could be in the memory of the 10 villages that were relocated out of the forest, to create the preserve. The park boasts of over 500 species of herbs, 50 species of trees and about 20 species of shrubs. Besides being popular as the home of the rare Hangul, it also houses musk deer, leopard, Himalayan Grey Langur, leopard cat, Himalayan Black Bear, yellow-throated marten among others. Himalayan monal, golden oriole, pygmy owlet, koklass pheasant, Kashmir flycatcher, Tytler’s leaf warbler, streaked laughingthrush, Himalayan rubythroat are among the popular birds that can be spotted here. By Air

The nearest airport from Dachigam National Park is at Srinagar, about 22 km away. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Jammu, Indore and Leh are well-connected to the Srinagar Airport. The closest international airport is Delhi airport, from where one can get connecting flights to Srinagar.

By Rail

The nearest railhead is located at Jammu. Mumbai, Delhi, Kanyakumari, Indore, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmadabad, Jabalpur and Rishikesh are among the popular cities that are well-connected to Jammu by rail. One can hire a taxi for the further journey. Buses are available too.

By Road

Srinagar, the nearest city from Dachigam National Park is well-connected by road to Jammu and other towns by public and private modes of transport. Buses are available from Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu, Leh, Pahalgam, etc. Regular jeep services are available from the park to Srinagar. One can also take the bus, which is a cheaper option, but less comfortable.
