Urban cycling has been one of the fastest growing trends in India. With more urban Indians — young and old — choosing to bicycle their way to work than ever before, cycling is slowly but surely becoming the coolest new thing. It has also helped that several young women and men have undertaken inter-state cycling trips. Some of these are our very own readers like Mrigendra Singh who cycled from Bangalore to Lucknow to prove that the world is a good place. What is Veloraid?

The upcoming cycling event is India’s longest amateur cycle race. Veloraid, which is in its fourth year, is organized by Lakecity Pedalers (or LCP) and Haybren Adventures and involves a grueling 180 km ride from Thane near Mumbai to Vaitarna and back. The organizers plan to reach out to underprivileged school children at Modak Sagar and donate bicycles and everyday stationery items. Also Read - 'Touching Gesture'! When is it being held?

The flag-off point is Hiranandani Meadows in Thane (W) at 6 am on Sunday, September 18.



What is the route?

Broadly, the route of Veloraid 2016 is Thane – Atgoan – Tansa- Vaitarna – Khardi- Kalyan- Thane.

How do I participate?

You will need to apply as a team. Each team is supposed to have three novices whose Facebook/Strava links, brief profiles and phone numbers need to be emailed to info@veloraid.com. The applications will be scrutinized by a committee of two race directors and organizing members. The decision of the scrutiny committee will be final. Organizers are restricting participation at 30 teams, which means you will need to hurry!
