Suresh Prabhu, the Railway Minister of India, seems very keen on offering travellers and tourists a unique train journey. India, a nation with the largest and most expansive rail network in the world, now gets the Vistadome, a one-of-its-kind train coach developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. The new train has just been inaugurated, and is arriving soon in the Jammu and Kashmir Valley. It has been designed to give a panoramic view of the sites along its routes. Once launched in Kashmir, travellers will get a greater look at the beauty and majesty of the valley that has been called ‘Paradise on Earth’. The new air-conditioned Vistadome coach has been said to be the first of its kind in the Indian Railways. It has large glass panes for a clear view of the landscape as the train speeds to its destination. There is an observation lounge where passengers will get a full panoramic view of towering mountains and chinar trees. Built at a price of INR 3.38 crore, each coach seats 40 people, with double-wide reclining seats that can be rotated by 360 degrees. Apart from the glass-domed ceilings that will soon let you see the Kashmir sky, the new Vistadome train also gets a multitier luggage rack and automatic sliding doors. Immortalised by Mughal Emperor Jehangir as “Heaven on Earth”, Kashmir Valley is certainly well-qualified for being the pilot site for the new Vistadome project. From the snow-clad Himalayan peaks to green valleys and still lakes and rugged, dusty terrain, Kashmir is incomparable in its beauty. It can leave people spellbound and makes for a great holiday destination throughout the year, even during the harsh winters. However, given how Kashmir’s winters trouble the railways, it is not clear how or whether the Vistadome will perform. Mr. Prabhu has promised a Vistadome coach for the Northeast region as well. For now, the route along which the Vistadome will travel has not yet been clarified. It remains a pilot project, with the only one coach running along the scenic route from Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. Along the way, travellers get a panoramic vista of the Anantagiri Ghats and Lambasingi Hills, coincidentally called the “Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh”.
