Jatinga is perhaps one of the most mysterious places in India. Travellers visiting Assam must visit this attraction point because of its one of the best places for bird-watching in India, and also because of this rather strange “bird suicide” phenomenon. You are sure to be mesmerised in the small, serene village of Jatinga, which is located about 9km south of the town of Haflong. Also Read - IRCTC Latest News: Railways Plans to Operate 36 Pairs of Trains With Additional Coaches In These States | Full List Here

For many years now, it has been observed by the villagers that during the monsoon months between August and November, many bird species die out of mysterious reasons. This occurs especially after dark; on foggy nights with no moon in the sky. The scientists have been working on this mind-boggling phenomenon where the birds, both resident and migratory, get hit by bamboos on their way to the light sources of the village. That is because during monsoons, they lose their natural habitat, often due to flooding, and while crossing Jatinga, they’re dazed and dishevelled, making them lose their way. The villagers take this as an opportunity to bring the down by planting bamboo poles which does the job of knocking them down. The villagers fear that these birds are actually the spirits of the dead that wish to harm them. This is the reason why especially ornithologists and bird watchers visit the village of Jatinga inhabited by about 2,500 Khasi-Pnar tribal people and few Dimasa people. Jatinga is a wonderful place to visit for a peaceful and quiet stay as well. It’s not a hassle to reach there; several state-run buses run from major cities and towns of Assam. But travellers usually like to take up a rickshaw trip from Haflong as they get to enjoy a wonderful and scenic journey.

Jatinga experiences pleasant weather all year around which makes it a very prime spot of Assam. The average temperature is 21.6 degree celsius. In summers, the temperature can go as high up as 36 degree celsius while in winters, from October to March, it is a comfortable season when the temperature ranges from 10 to 25 degree celsius.
