One of the most awaited events in Kerala—Nehru Trophy Boat Race—was held on August 13 and the atmosphere in Alappuzha, where this thrilling event was held, was electrical. The annual Nehru Trophy Boat race is held every year on the second Saturday in the month of August in memory of Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and to mark his visit to Alappuzha in 1952. The venue for this water regatta is the Punnamda Lake near Alappuzha. People from all over the state and abroad throng to its banks to be a part of this magnificent event, to see the oarsmen of the majestic Chundan Vallams or snake boat matching the rhythmic rowing pattern to reach the final point. Originally a war boat, the snake boat is a 100 to 120-foot long boat with a raised prow and can carry approximately 100 rowers. Moving through the backwaters, the Chundan Vallam resembles a snake and hence the name. This year 20 snake boats fought fiercely to win the prized trophy. Here is a glimpse of this event. The trophy is a snake boat’s replica on a wooden abacus and has the following inscription: “To the winner of the boat race which is a unique feature of community life in Travancore-Cochin.”
