The metro is one of the best cities in India and you can hope for an electrifying New Year here. If your idea of ringing in the New Year is with a big party, Mumbai is your best bet in Maharashtra. Almost every pub, club and restaurant has something special for this occasion and you can take your pick from numerous parties with each having a different theme to go with. If not parties, Mumbai has sightseeing attractions that have their own charm on New Year. From the Gateway of India to Marine Drive, take in the view of the Arabian Sea and enjoy fireworks at midnight. The wine capital of the country, Nashik is home to a number of vineyards and the season is pleasant enough to enjoy sipping wine in this region of Maharashtra. If you are looking for slightly chilly climate this New Year, head to Nashik. Book a stay in or close to a vineyard and then enjoy a lovely evening as you take a wine tour, taste different wines and nibble on finger foods. If you want to begin the first day of the year with the blessings of the almighty, you can head to Shirdi or Triambakeshwar that are close to Nashik.

If you are a beach bum and would prefer ringing in the New Year close to the sea with sand under your feet, Alibaug is one option to consider. Maharashtra has other beaches too like Tarkarli, Dapoli, Dahanu, etc but Alibaug is more popular and also hosts New Year parties. There are accommodation options available in the form of villas and resorts and you can reach Alibaug via a ferry too. All these make it a popular weekend getaway. Even if there isnt a party, you can have your very own under the stars.
If all you want to do this New Year is to take a relaxing weekend trip with your loved ones to a serene location, hop in the car and drive to Mahabaleshwar. The hill station is perfect to rejuvenate and ring in the New Year in the midst of nature. Thanks to its popularity, you will find accommodation to suit every budget so you can choose a luxury resort that has an amazing view from the room and other amenities or even go for a budget hotel where you save up on the stay and indulge in other ways. Mahabaleshwar has several sightseeing points that give you a panoramic view of the hills surrounding it. Panchgani also falls en route and you can visit it as well.
Done with parties and sightseeing and want to do something adventurous this time around, you should visit Kolad on the New Year weekend. It is known for its water sports especially white water rafting that is available throughout the year, even during the monsoon. And the best part about it is that you can try the sport even if it is your very first time as they provide some training before you sit in the raft. While there are one-day packages available too, it is best to stay overnight and enjoy other activities as well and come back the next day. Kolad is best reached by road as the nearest railway station is 43 km away. You can stay in a cottage, tent, homestay or hotel when here.

Pune is another option to consider in Maharashtra for the New Year as it has a mix of parties as well as sightseeing attractions. The main city is home to a number of hangout places where you can party the night away. All these places host their own New Year party and you can expect a young crowd thanks to IT companies and college campuses in Pune. And if you prefer taking a history lesson, Pune has attractions like the Shaniwar Wada, Mastani Mahal, Sinhagad Fort and more. On the outskirts of Pune are other peaceful points that offer tranquillity in the midst of nature like Mulshi, Kamshet, etc. There are several buses plying to Pune every day.
Lonavala is quite a popular spot in Maharashtra and has become so commercial that you will find tourists here all year round. Several hundred hotels have mushroomed here and then you also have the option of booking villas for private parties that are quite popular during New Year. Get your gang and head to any of these, some come with a private pool as well and have a memorable weekend in Lonavala. If you prefer hotels, Lonavala has a plethora of those too. And if you are a first-timer, you can visit sightseeing points like the Bhushi Dam, Tiger Point, etc. Lonavala is a stones throw away from Mumbai and Pune and makes for a quick weekend getaway.
