Ramadan 2016 is underway and like every year, devotees have started observing disciplined fasts to be broken with iftar in the evening. The day-long fasts continue for the entire month of Ramadan which started on June 6 (SEE Ramadan 2016 date in India and its significance) this year. The practice of observing fats in the month of Ramdan started way back in the year 624 CE  and is followed with great devotion all across the world with Muslims observing strict fasts, the only exceptions being those who have health issues. (ALSO SEE History of Ramadan: Origin of the Islamic holy month of fasting) Apart from fasting, prayers are offered five to six times a day (Click here for Ramadan 2016 prayer timings) and the entire ritual signifies abstinence from wordly pleasures. If you are in India, it is important for you to know the iftar timings. Iftar happens to be the name of the evening meal which is had at sunset to break the day’s fast. Common iftar items include haleem and nonbu kanjiIftar is an extremely important meal for those observing the fast and they also often invite friends to join in during the meal.
