Reckong Peo, the stunning headquarters of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh makes for a refreshing visit to the intrepid traveller. Perched atop 2,300 meters, the place is famed for its traditional structures, vivid culture, and sprawling apple orchards, thanks to the mild climate through out the year.
Brimming with life and tranquillity, Reckong Peo is the only place in Himachal from where two of the greatest Himalayan peaks are visible – Kinnaur Kailash (6,050m) and Raldang (5,499m).
Kinnaur Kailash is regarded as one of the mythical homes of Lord Shiva; and is home to a 79 feet high rock formation called the Siva Linga. It is said that the rock formation changes colour through the day and holds great religious significance to the Hindus and Buddhists.
However, you could choose to stay in the town or in Kalpa about 13km away. There are some rather great options to stay in both these places. Other attractions worth exploring in Reckong Peo are the Chandika Temple, Khab, Bhaba Valley, Chango, Leo, Kanam and some gorgeous Buddhist monasteries.
Reckong Peo is perfect for those who seek to be amidst nature; outdoor activities like camping is highly recommended here. The food is simpler and tastier than in most other hill stations. A visit to the centrally located Little Chef restaurant is a must for some European cuisine. Snow View is another restaurant worth going to for a nice, tasty meal. Buying a bottle of freshly made, local apple cider is a must-do here. They make for great gifts to take back home with you.
The Kinnauri women are gorgeously dressed in their traditional garb, and an interaction with the locals give a good insight into the life of the people of this quaint hill-town.The nearest airport and railhead from Reckong Peo is in Shimla about 235km away.
