Ross Island – officially known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island – is a beautiful place to visit when in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It’s just 3km from central Port Blair, and if you’re done with the beaches and would like to learn a little about the history –  it’s a lovely place to be traversed for hours. A typical feature of Ross Island is that the century old trees here have grown on important landmarks such as Officers Quarters and the rundown Church; you’ll see the wild vines, roots, and trunks of the trees covering the structures lending them a distinctive charm. A few other attractions you must consider visiting are the Chief Commissioner’s House, the Cathedral, and Graveyard of the Britishers. A museum called Smritika is maintained by the Indian Navy on this island and makes for quite a visit too. Also, for those who’re keen, there’s a state-of-the-art light and sound show commissioned by the tourism department to help you learn about the era of the bygone days. You must watch out for the great panoramic view of the nearby island; observe the fearless peacocks, deers and ducks roaming casually about you on the island, and make some time to breathe on Ferar beach where there’s an abundance of  cool breeze that sway the coconut palm tress.

Travelling to Ross Island is not a difficult task, there are plenty of ferry rides from Marine Park, Port Blair. To cover the entire island in a day, it is better to take a ferry in the morning and return back the same afternoon because the ferries run during the day. You can also combine a trip to Viper Island and North Bay Coral Island in the same day.

The best time to visit Ross Island is during the months of November to February. These months are an ideal time to explore the island because during the season the weather remains cool and pleasant making it a great time for sightseeing and other water activities.
