Shravan, the holiest month for Hindus is currently ongoing as it falls in July or August every year. Much like how the dates change of Hindu festivals every year, the dates are also different based on different calendars in different regions. The north of India follows different dates while Shravan in Gujarat starts at a different time. According to the Gujarati calendar, Shravan falls in the tenth month and this year, started on August 3. It will end on September 1, 2016. The entire month is very holy and several festivals are celebrated during Shravan. Some significant dates to remember are:

Putrada Ekadashi: August 14

Aja Ekadasi: August 28

Shravan Sud Padvo (waxing of the moon): August 3 to August 18

Shravan Vad Padvo Paksha (waning of the moon): August 19 to September 1

Shravan Purnima: August 18

Raksha Bandhan: August 18

Sawan Amas: September 1

Pavtira Bara: August 15

Krishna Janmashtami: August 24

During Shravan month, people refrain from eating four meals and restrict it to only one. They also avoid eating meat and alcohol intake. Shravan is also peak monsoon season when the chances of getting water-borne diseases are higher so people go easy on their stomach and eat light. The fasts observed on Mondays are to please Shiva and seek his blessings.
