The 33rd edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela is back in Faridabad, Haryana and will be held from February 1 to 17 this year. The reason it has been a success for all these years is that it showcases the finest traditions of handicrafts, handlooms, culture and cuisine from all parts of the India as well as foreign countries. To preserve the dying arts and crafts of India, Surajkund Crafts Mela was hosted for the first time in 1987. The Mela has played a pivotal role in establishing a conducive environment for craftsperson to directly market their wares to potential consumers; thereby eliminating the middlemen. A large number of renowned national and international folk artistes and cultural groups perform at both the chaupals and the open-air theatres located in the premises of the Fair. It’s an experience of a lifetime exploring the exquisite mix of thatched huts, folk songs, flamboyant colours, ornate handicrafts and aromatic food of different cultures all under the same roof. There are also designated activities for amusement, adventure sports and joy rides to make it popular among the young as well. The entire fair is set up around the kund or the sun pool area and has a different theme every year. This mega event being an international platform showcase the Indian handicraft items bringing together potters, weavers, wood carvers, metal workers, painters who work with gorgeous materials such as textiles, wood stock, ivory, terracotta, stone, lacquer, mirror, cane and grass.
Additionally, other excellent form of entertainment by acrobats, musicians and magicians keep the crowd alive and buzzing. Sports like golf, rock climbing and water sports such as kayaking along with open air quizzes are the most fun activities to participate in.
