Most people get cold feet just by thinking about travelling with a baby but being a parent needn’t stop your travel life. Karen Edward, a nurse for National Health Insurance of the UK, used her maternity leave to travel with her partner, Shaun Bayes and her 10-month-old baby, Esme. Karen is also the creator of Travel Mad Mum, an Instagram account and a website, which has over 50,000 followers. She travelled for 10 months across the world with her tiny tot.(ALSO READ JetBlue’s latest campaign makes flying with crying babies the best thing that could happen to you!) I this photo of Esmé downing a fresh coconut in Cambodia. We had just gone to watch the sunset behind the temples in Siem Reap and were about to board our tuk tuk back to town when our driver gave us a fresh coconut. Cambodian people I find, are extremely generous despite not having a lot. It is so different from other neighbouring countries because they aren’t always trying to sell you things or catch you out for money. For example if you agree a price of a tuk tuk, they don’t even look for extra money if you want to stop for lunch. Maybe they realise that this generous attitude makes you want to give it to them even more. After cooling down with our nice drink we hopped back on, raced through the cooler evening streets watching the sky go from a pink to a pitch black with all of the twinkly stars .. And where am I now? On the train going to my 12.5 hour night shift.. Karen and Shaun gave their flat up for rent, sold their car and started the journey when their baby was born. The trip was funded by Karen’s maternity pay and landscaping work done by Shaun. Baby Esme was given the travel vaccinations before the leaving for the trip and in New Zealand. The first stop was New Zealand, the birth place of Shaun. They explored New Zealand for several months and later set off for a trip back home via Asia. This seven-week trip through Asia included six nations. Australia is another destination they visited during their trip. (ALSO SEE 5 best countries to travel with kids for summer holidays)

According to Karen, the visit to Taiwan was the best part of the trip. The country is baby-friendly, she says. Every metro station was equipped with a family room with wipes and recliners for breastfeeding. She admitted that travelling with a baby was different. Proper planning and preparation is required. Having a baby with you on a trip will slow things down. She counted Pearlshare app and Google Translate were very useful while travelling to different countries.

Some moments in life you don’t forget. Being dropped off at 6am in the pitch dark by a tuk tuk driver in what felt like absolute wilderness in Siem Reap. I can’t even see my hand in front of my own face. We need to find our way to the top of a temple for sunrise! We use our phones to follow the path through jungle. I can hear wildlife all around me but can’t see it.. Esmé nestled cosy on my front and still asleep. We find ourselves on top of a hill but can’t work out where the temple is.. Eventually when the sun starts creeping up we figure out we are standing in front of it!.. Then we watched this magic happen… Rise and shine Angel .. Karen and Shaun love travelling and want to incorporate their little daughter into their way of life. They are confident that the sound and smell of different places will stimulate her senses.
