When we think of beaches, we think of states like Goa, Pondicherry, and Kerala. There are some stunning beaches there, no doubt; but that shouldn’t deter you from exploring the rather underrated beaches of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh has a coastline of 970km and is hence home to many, many beaches. The sea coast extends along the Bay of Bengal from Srikakulam district to Nellore district; which means there are beaches in almost every district of the state. Here are some of the top ones you could plan a trip to in the first month of the New Year.
Stretching for 17km, Kalingapatnam Beach is the first beaches in the north of Andhra Pradesh and also one of the ancient harbour towns in the state. Back in the day, perfumes and textiles were exported to other countries through this port. A Buddhist Stupa and an attractive British lighthouse are the main attractions on this beach. Since an open road ends on the sea bed, the sea on this beach is also known as Open Road Sea. The nearest airport is Vizag, which is 108km away.
Mypadu beach is the regional beach 25km away from the Nellore main city. There’s a lot of fishing activities and goverment cruises sailing on the beach here. Mypadu is where people mostly head to catch surreal sunrises. It is relatively less crowded, and makes for an ideal spot for core relaxation. Water sports like jet skis and aquatic motorbikes are quite popular here. Regular buses ply from Nellore to the beach, and the nearest airport is in Tirupati, which is 135km away.
Machilipatnam Beach, also known as Manginapudi beach, is situated 15km away from the historic port city of Machilipatnam. The golden beachfront spans long miles and always remains abuzz with travellers and locals seeking to unwind. During the Hindu month of Kartik, people throng the beach for bathing in the sea water to purify themselves as part of the customary rituals. A giant Hanuman statue is the main star attraction here. The nearest airport from here is Gannavaram Airport, which is 70km away.
Rushikonda Beach is one of the prime attractions in the vicinity of Vizag; reason being the golden sand here just like the beaches in Sri Lanka or Australia. The water here is especially peaceful and calm, making it the best beach for swimming and other water activities. Interestingly, this beach is also the most sought after for playing Holi; the entire beach stretch converting into a riotof colours. For adventure junkies there’s enough water sports such as water skiing, speed boating, and wind surfing. The nearest airport from here is 23km away in Vizag.
