Turns out that Uber is hell bent on ensuring you don’t step right out of the pub and behind the wheel of your car. So the good folks at Mumbai taxiwallahs’ most hated app-based cab aggregator are fishing out potential clients right before they get out of the pub! Uber is partnering with the Mumbai traffic police in an attempt to reduce cases of drunk driving by installing what they are calling Uber breathalysers’ at bars and pubs in the city. The Uber breathalyser is a breathtakingly simple idea — a kiosk that will analyze the alcohol content in a person’s blood and accordingly flash either a red light or a green one. Green means you can drive back home yourself and red, of course, means you absolutely shouldn’t. When the red light flashes, the kiosk very intelligently helps you request an Uber home so you don’t have to stumble out of the pub and go looking for a cab yourself neither are you tempted to drive back home! The first Uber breathalyzer has already been launched in Nook at Kurla’s Phoenix Marketcity mall and more will be installed soon. In a statement, Shailesh Sawlani, the general manager at Uber Mumbai said: “We’re excited to launch the first Breathalyser in partnership with the Mumbai Traffic Police. Through this campaign, we aim to build awareness against drunk-driving and give people a convenient and reliable ride back home. We hope to work with the Mumbai Traffic Police to install these devices across all bars and pubs in the city.”
