Today is Varalakshmi Vratam 2017. Married Hindu women in south India observe fasts and perform prayers today to pay their respects to Hindu Goddess Varalakshmi. In return they ask for boons of health, wealth and knowledge for their respective families. Celebrated mostly in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Varalakshmi Vratam is one of the auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. Varalakshmi is the consort of revered Hindu God Vishnu and the term vara means boons or blessing. It is believed that praying to Varalakshmi on this day is akin to praying to Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms of Lakshmi that stand for wealth, earth, learning, love, fame, peace, pleasure and strength respectively. The festival plays a significant role in the lives of married women who believe that praying to Goddess Varalakshmi will grant good health to their respective husbands. Many women also pray for the vara of progeny. Every year, Varalakshmi Vratam is celebrated on the day before the full moon or purnima. We have already given you all the details about How and when Varalakshmi Vratam Puja is held. One legend states that the puja came into being as Lord Parmeswara, the supreme God, asked his consort Parvati to perform the Varalakshma Vratam for the well-being of their family. Since Parvati is a revered Goddess of Hindu mythology, followers emulated the puja she performed. Since then, every year, Hindu devotees clean their houses and decorate photos and idols of Goddess Lakshmi on this day. Decorations include flowers, turmeric, incense, vermilion, and banana leaves. The idol is flanked by a steel kalash and a thali which consists of fruits. A coconut is broken, like in most Hindu pujas, and the two broken halves are kept on one side each of the idol.
