The surreal looking Pangong Lake lies cradled between India and China; one-third of the endorheic lake is in India and two-thirds in China. Situated at an altitude of almost 4,350m above sea level, this blue water body is the world’s highest saltwater lake.

It’s visually stunning; the blue of the lake stands in stark contrast to the arid mountains surrounding it. Extending upto 160km, the lake is known to change colours to shades of blue, green and red through different points in the day. Whether you’re out clicking pictures or soaking up the beauty – Pangong Tso is a great escape from the bustling city life.

One of the main things to do at Pangong Lake is camping. The landscape at night is absolutely enthralling; and the experience can be taken a notch higher with a bonfire, a barbecue and your loved ones. Whether its watching the stars shine in the night sky or catching a glorious sunrise – staying in a camp by the lake is one of the best things to do here.

This lake is the breeding ground for many migratory birds such as the bar-headed goose and Brahminy duck, making it a birder’s delight. Also, look out for marmots or large squirrels that are found in mountainous areas and reside in burrows. They mostly come out of their potholes during the day, so there’s a good chance you’ll spot them on your way to the lake.

Since travellers usually leave Pangong Lake around sunrise, so as to be able to reach Leh before sunset, it’s highly recommended that you take a nice, long dip in the cold and brackish waters of the lake. In winter, the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water, so walking on it is an experience of its own. This is perhaps one of the most adventurous and thrilling things to do in the beautiful region of Ladakh.
