The laying of a 240-km broad-gauge railway line connecting two major population centres in Andaman and Nicobar Islands has finally been approved by the government meaning that it will soon be more convenient to travel across major portions of the islands. The Andaman and Nicobar islands are considered as India’s very own exotic holiday spot. The blue lagoons, white sand beaches and mesmerizing horizon scenes make it a popular holiday attraction. However, travel options within the islands have been limited with people having to take either the ferry service or the bus to traverse the 350-km north-south expanse. The new railway line is part of a major infrastructure push for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which have come to be renowned as one of India;s major tourism spots. They hold immense strategic value too but the inhospitable terrain has made it difficult to have formidable transport options. The new railway link is expected to run parallel to the coast. It will have a number of bridges and will connect the capital city of Port Blair to the northern population centres. While the most important purpose of the link is to boost tourism from the current 4.5 lakh visitors a year to around 6 lakh visitors a year, the railway line is also being looked at as a strategic link for the Defence Ministry, similar to the ones constructed in Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. This new railway link could facilitate easy movement of troops and equipment in the event of a conflict. Approved on account of its uniqueness and strategic importance, this new railway link is expected to cost Rs 2,413.68 crore.
