An ancient jyotirling shrine, Bhimashankar temple is located in the beautiful ghat region of the Sahyadri hills. The temple, which has the Nagara architectural style, was built in the 13th century. The sabhamandap and the shikhara of the temple was built by Nana Phadnavis in the 18th century. The sanctum, like many other Shiv temples in the area, is located at a lower level. The temple also has a unique Roman style bell at the front. The bell was offered by Bajirao Peshwa’s brother, Chimaji Appa, to the temple. Bhimashankar temple stands near the origin of Bhima River.
