Located in the heart of the city, Mylapore, Kapaleeshwar temple is dedicated to Shiva. As per the Puranas, Shiva was worshipped as a peacock by Shakti. Peacock is called mayil in Tamil, giving the place the vernacular name Mylapore. At Kapaleeshwar temple, Shiva is worshipped as Kapaleeswarar and his consort Parvati is as Karpagambal (goddess of the wish-yielding tree). Built around the 7th century CE, the temple has Dravidian architectural style.
The temple is an architectural splendour with towering gopurams and intricate carvings. There is a sacred tank inside the temple along with a line of vahanas (vehicle or chariots), including parrot, goat, peacock, elephant and bull among other. The vahanas act as the seats for god and goddesses during religious processions. Devotees throng to this temple during the festivals of Arupathimoovar, Brahmotsavam and Panguni Peruvizha.
