Situated on the banks of Ramganga River, Chaukhutia is a picturesque hill station at a distance of 294 km from Dehradun in Almora district of Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region. In Kumaoni, Chaukhutia literally means four feet from the roads leading in four directions. From Chaukhutia, one can reach Ramnagar, Karnaprayag, Almora and Kheera.
Located in the Himalayan mountain ranges, Chaukhutia enjoys pleasant weather and boasts of pristine natural beauty. The hill station, situated at a height of 1646 meters, is spread over an area of just 12 sq km. Not much is known about Chaukhutia’s past, but its rich history is reflected in the ruins and monuments built during the rule of the Katyuri Kings. Pandukholi are stunning caves, believed to have been built by the Pandavas during their stay in the region.
Doonagiri, situated just a few kilometers from Chaukhutia, is believed to be the place where Hanuman dropped a part of Dronagiri mountain while carrying it to Lanka. Rudeshwar Mahadev temple is another popular pilgrim site in Chaukhutia.In addition to being a popular pilgrimage site, Chaukhutia is also a good place to enjoy trekking. Small treks to Doonagiri, Jaurasi and Jwarhat start from the hamlet. Chaukutia is sparsely populated.
The locals generally speak Kumaoni. Some of them are comfortable speaking in Hindi and Punjabi. Popular tourist spots such as Almora (90 km), Nainital (116 km), Kasauni (60 km) and Ranikhet (51 km) located close to Chaukhutia are extremely famous for their natural beauty. There are limited accommodation options in Chaukhutia. There are no luxury hotels in the hill station. However, a few budget and mid-range hotels are situated on the Jorasi-Chaukhutia Road. Apart from that one can also find forest rest houses which provide budget accommodation.

There aren’t too many eating options in Chaukhutia. There are a few small restaurants that serve basic meal. A few stalls serving parathas and pakoras can also be found. Hotels with restaurants attached serve Indian and Continental delicacies.
The hill station enjoys cool climate throughout the year. During summers the temperature ranges from 8-22 degree Celsius. Winters are chilly in Chaukhutia and snowfall is common. The hill station receives moderate rainfall. October-June is the best time to visit Chaukhutia.
