Traditionally, Namgyal Monastery was housed in the red section of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. After Tibet was invaded by the Chinese in 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama along with 100,000 Tibetans fled to Nepal and India. Dharamsala granted asylum to the Dalai Lama and the refugees. The Dalai Lama re-established the Namgyal Monastery near his new residence. The monastery is dedicated to preserving the Tibetan artistic, religious and intellectual traditions with the help of the Namgyal monks and the Dalai Lama. The main role of the monastery is to help the Dalai Lama with the rituals and practices.
The monastery manages an elderly home in Shimla and a temple in Kushinagar. The humble abode of His Holyness, the Dalai Lama, Namgyal monastery is a must-visit for anyone visiting Mcleod Ganj in Dharamsala.
