Popularly known as the ‘Princess of the Arabian Sea’ for its golden sands, blue water and lush green vegetation, Cherai Beach is situated in Vypeen Island, about 26 km from Eranakulam, the twin city of Kochi.
The 15 km long beach differs from others as it is very clean and shallow and ideal for swimming, sun bathing and surfing. It is less commercialised than Kovalam and Varkala. On the beach, visitors can enjoy several water sports activities like water scooters, speed boats, canoe ride. There is a park for children too on the beach.
Occasionally, one gets to see dolphins frolicking in the sea. Chinese fishing nets at the far end of the beach adds to the scenic beauty of the beach.
The main beach area has been beautified. High mast lamps ensure the beach remains safe and open for public during nights too. Of late, Cherai has become popular with honeymooning couples.
During December, the beach is the venue for a five-day tourism festival called the Cherai Beach Tourism Mela. Cultural shows and performances of traditional art forms like Kathakali are held on the occasion.
There are plenty of accommodation options in Kochi. One can find budget, mid-range and luxury hotels on the beach.The hotels are known for their service and facilities. It is advisable to book rooms in advance during the tourist season between November to February as rooms fill up quickly.
There are few restaurants and cafes on the beach. However, one can get delicious seafood on the beach. You can find multi-cuisine restaurants in Kochi. From North Indian to Chinese, from traditional to international cuisine, you will be spoilt for choice. Most of the restaurants do serve sadya, the classic lunch of Kerala on banana leaf.
Cherai Beach is an all season destination. However, October to April is the best season. During these periods the climate remains pleasant.
