Fort Aguada was built by the Portuguese in 1612 to protect Goa from the Dutch and the Marathas. Although small in comparison to the forts of Rajasthan, Aguada is a very well-preserved fort. The fort got its name from a spring which was used by crew of passing ships to replenish their stock of fresh water. Aguada means water. Just like the citadel, the Fort Aguada Lighthouse has stood witness to the passage of time. Built around 1864, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Asia. The lighthouse was in service for over 100 years when it was replaced by a more modern lighthouse. Visitors can enter the lighthouse and watch the panoramic view the lush green countryside and beautiful beaches.
