Its exact date of construction is not known; however, historical records show it was ruled by the Devagiri Yadavs (1248–1318) and later by Tughlaqs (1318–1347). Rule of Gujarat Sultan and Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar followed. Shivaji won the fort from Portuguese by escalade in 1670. Control of the fort went to Mughals and later to the Marathas. The British East India Company won the fort in 1818.
Karnala fort consists of two forts. The 125 feet high basalt pillar is situated at the centre of the fort. The fort was used as a watchtower and it offers panoramic views of Prabalgad and Rajmachi. The fort was of strategic importance and overlooked the Bor Pass which connected Konkan coast with Pune.
