Place Details:
Subhas Chandra Bose, respectfully known as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose or simply Netaji, was one of the most influential freedom fighters during India’s long march towards freedom. Initially a crucial member of the Indian National Congress political party, he grew disillusioned by the moderate stance of the party that was trying to share power with the British. His shifting position towards complete independence came to the notice of the British authorities, who promptly placed him under house arrest. Today, his ancestral home where he stayed as a prisoner and later escaped from in 1941 is big part of Kolkata‘s identity.
The home where Netaji grew up and was later imprisoned in was built by his father, Janakinath Bose, in 1909. It was where Netaji spent his childhood days and lived in during the early years of the Indian freedom struggle. It was also where he lived as a rising leader in the Indian National Congress, and became the center of many political activities. You can find photos of his life in this museum, including the getaway car he used during his daring escape from his prison home. The staircase that played a big role in his escape is also preserved as is, and so is the study and bedroom. CHECK OUT: Here Are 4 Indian Museums Dedicated To Lesser-Known Freedom Fighters
