Gateway to Lahaul, the Barren Splendour of Himachal Pradesh, Khoksar is located at an elevation of about 10,300 ft on the banks of the Chandra River. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains that are avalanche prone, the village is located about 73 km north of Manali in the Lahaul–Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
The village remains covered in snow during the winter months and is the coldest place in all of Lahaul that remains inhabited. Huge heaps of snow, deposited by avalanches on the banks of the Chandra River; are a common sight during winter.
Khoksar is a paradise for adventure sport lovers. The mountaineering institute that is located near Manali organises basic and advance training courses, in trekking, mountaineering, skiing and water sports at many points on the banks of the Chandra River. An institute similar to the Manali Mountaineering Institute at Khoksar, caters to the needs of adventure seekers.
Angling tours are organised at certain points in the Chandra River. Trout and Mahseer found in the rivers are an angler’s delight. Angling tournaments are organized by the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department in April and in September which attracts enthusiasts and photographers to the village.
The best season to go trekking in the region is between the months of April and November. There are a few known treks that start from Khoksar and more popular treks to Lamadugh Meadows, Solang Valley and Koshla-Tree line can be joined from Khoksar as well. Most of these treks last for less than two days with a choice of packages available ranging from food choices to different varieties of rented camps.
Stretched of Chandra River at Khoksar are good for white water rafting. The sport has its dangers but the well-trained crew and high quality rafts lessen the dangers to a considerable extent.
Paragliding in Khoksar is catching up in popularity. Khoksar is often overshadowed by Manali which is more popular; however, Khoksar offers same high standards but without the long queues and big crowds. Rohtang Pass, 21 km south and Solang valley, 63 km southwest offer great opportunities for paragliding. Operators offer basic training for amateurs and experienced paragliders can go solo for short flights.
Other activities that can be done while in Khoksar are rock climbing, rappelling, skiing, ice climbing, snowboarding and ski touring.
