THE ASIATIC SOCIETY

Place Details:

The Asiatic Society was once the most important centre for literary events and a place where intellectuals would meet, back in the 19th and 20th century. It is one of the many famous landmarks in Mumbai and boasts of being one of the oldest literary societies of the nation. Various other including the Geographical and the Anthropological Societies of Bombay collaborated and merged with the Asiatic Society.

What is currently known as the Asiatic Society, was established as the Literary Society of Bombay. The society was established over 200 years back on November 2, 1804. The Asiatic Society of Bombay was the reason why another literay society was established in Bengal which was called the Asiatic Society of Bengal which is located in Kolkata.

It is located facing the Hornimon Circle in the Fort area of Mumbai. The monument library is home to hundreds and thousands of books, a large number of coins and stamps belonging to various centuries. In fact, it is beleievd that the Asiatic society is home to one of the two original manuscripts of the Divine Comedy written by Italian poet, Dante.
