Place Details:
Dhobi Ghat is yet another major landmark in Mumbai. Not only is it the world’s largest outdoor laundry, but it is also home to one of the biggest laundrymen communities in India. Over the years, Dhobi Ghat has become a major tourist attraction, especially among foreign travelers who love to walk around the area and get to know more about the community. A tour at Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat is an organized affair. Your tour guide will definitely be well-equipped in Hindi and Marathi along with decent English.
Several people tend to misunderstand Dhobi Talao and Dhobi Ghat to be the same place, which it isn’t! While Dhobi Talao is a place in south Bombay, Dhobi Ghat is located in the western area of Mumbai, near Mahalaxmi railway station. The laundry was started by Dhobi Kalyan & Audhyogik Vikas Co-op and in 2013, Dhobi Ghat was honored with a spot on the World Records India. Over 5,000 laundrymen work here and the ghat is now home to close to 200 families. Clothes from Mumbai’s hospitals and hotels get washed here, over 100,000 of them, each and every day.
