The only unconquered fort along the western coast, Murud-Janjira is best known for the fort, the beaches, and the villages laced by coconut trees. The fort is the center of all activity in the town, with tourists traveling from all over the country to visit the strongest marine fort in India. The only way to reach the fort is via sail boats that set off from Rajapuri jetty.
While there's not much else to do around the town, the fort brings in a large number of crowds. With 19 bastions that still stand, its main gate can only be seen from close by. A small gate that opens into the sea is also a part of the fort and was used as an escape route.
