Place Details:
One of the most underrated places to visit in India, Sevagram ashram is where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1936 till his death in 1948. It served as Gandhiji’s headquarters where several important meetings were held and decisions were taken. This is where Mahatma Gandhi lived like a commoner without electricity and modern facilities. This is why the ashram is also called the Mahatma Gandhi ashram. It all started when Mahatma Gandhi started the Dandi march from Sabarmati in 1930. On the invitation of his friend Jamnalal Bajaj, Gandhiji visited Wardha in 1934. It was here that he took the decision of not returning to Sabarmati till India achieved independence. As a result, he put up in a village called Shedgaon which was later named “Sevagram” meaning “village of service”.
Located in Maharashtra’s Wardha district, Sevagaram ashram today serves as a memorial to Gandhiji’s life. Sevagram is one of the most historic places in India where Mahatma Gandhi left his mark. It is just 8 km from Wardha town and 75 km from the city of Nagpur. The ashram has its own food and stay facilities and makes for a wonderful experience for history buffs and those interested in the life and philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi.
