A picturesque hill station 117 km from Nainital, Kausani is situated in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. Kausani is located at an altitude of about 1890 m and sits on a ridge in the Himalayan Mountains overlooking Garur and Baijnath Katyuri valley on one side and Someshwar valley on the other. The hill station offers panoramic views of Himalayan peaks like Trishul (7120 m), Nandadevi (7817 m) and Panchuli. Kausani is flanked by river Kosi and river Gomti on either side. Impressed with its scenic beauty and salubrious climate, Mahatma Gandhi called it ‘Switzerland of India’.
Unlike Nainital or Dalhousie, Kausani is not well known and doesn’t figure on the list of many tourists. However, its beauty is peerless and unspoiled. The scenic locales, salubrious climate and unhurried pace of life makes it an ideal location to spend holidays. Kausani is also famous for its high flavour tea. The Kausani tea grows at an altitude ranging from 1200-1800 feet.
Kausani is an all-weather destination. During the winter months of December and January, It snows heavily and thousands of tourists visit this place to admire the snowscapes. Kausani remains pleasant during summer (March-May) with temperature hovering between 25 degree Celsius and 11 degree Celsius. In summer, it turns into a trekking destination. The trek to Adi-Kailash via Dharchula and Sunderdhunga Glacier is a favourite with trekkers. It is advisable to avoid visiting Kausani during rains as the region gets slippery. September to May is the best time to visit.

Budget, medium range and resorts are available for stay in Kausani. Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) operates resthouse in Kausani. Almost all hotels offer panoramic views of the mountains. Accommodation can also be found in ashrams in Kausani. Though the facilities offered are limited, the ashrams are not low in comfort. It is different experience staying in the ashrams. Several hotels also organize trekking tours for the tourists.
Eating out options are limited in Kausani. Best options are the restaurants attached to the hotels. Local eateries calleddhabas offer mainly vegetarian food.
