Pushkar fair or Pushkar ka Mela, is an annual five-day camel and livestock fair held in Pushkar. While men buy and sell livestock, women manage stalls which exhibit accessories, clothes, textiles and fabrics. Pilgrims bathe themselves in the holy water of Pushkar Lake, so as to wash off their sins. The festival takes off with a camel race as it is one of the world’s largest camel fairs. It features competitions like ‘matka phod’, ‘longest moustache’ and ‘bridal competition’ which have gained a lot of popularity. Around 100,000 pilgrims attend Pushkar fair every year! It is celebrated for seven days in the month of Karthik of the Hindu Calendar from Karthik Ekadashi and Karthik Poornima.
