Place Details:
Shimla is abundant with places known for their natural beauty and one such lovely green holiday spot is Annadale. Located in the western part of Shimla, Annadale is a former race course now used as a helipad and army playground. Occasionally, it is also the venue for festival celebrations. Annadale was named by a British visitor, Captain Charles Pratt Kennedy, in fond memory of a woman he admired. It is now misnamed Annandale due to a mistake in spelling that took place sometime in the last few decades.

There is quite a history behind Annandale. Dating back to 1840, Annadale was used as a spot for recreational and amusement activities by the British. It was the venue for several polo matches, dog and flower shows, and fancy fairs. In fact, the first fancy fair that was held here dates back to 1839. Around the 1880’s, further improvements in the ground facilities and expansion in the ground area made it perfect for cricket tournaments too. Now, Annadale is known mainly for its military association and scenic beauty. The Military museum located here is a delight for history lovers.
