An ancient site in the city of Ujjain, the Kaliadeh Palace is a delight for history buffs. The site is still sometimes referred to as Surya mandir. It is believed that there was a Sun temple at the site where this palace stands. In one of the old Indian texts called the skanda purana, there is mention of the Sun temple and two tanks around it.

The architecture of the palace, especially yhe dome, is an epitome of the Persian architectural style. Some fragmented ancient scripts indicate that the palace was built in 1458 AD. Other inscriptions indicate visits by Mughal emperor Akbar and then Jehangir. After being destroyed by the Pindaris, the palace was re-built in the year 1920 by Madhav Rao Scindia.
