Popular with Shiva devotees, the Kal Bhairava temple in Ujjain is located on the bans of the river Kshipra. It is believed to have been built by King Bhadrasen centuries ago. Two main sects of Shiva worshipers – Kapalika and Aghora – worship the Kal Bhairava. It is considered the chief among the eight bhairavas of Saivite tradition. Ujjain was historically renowned as a notable center of worship for these two sects. It is now a place for worship for all devotees.

Traces of ancient Malwa style paintings can be seen on the walls of the temple. There is also a village named Bhairogarh nearby which is named after the temple.
