Popular as one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Shiva, Shree Mahakaleshwar temple is a popular pilgrim destination in the ancient city of Ujjain. It is built in five levels including an underground level. The temple has spacious courtyards. The shrine of Lord Shiva in the temple is believed to have formed on its own. The walls are decorated with inscriptions, sculptures and motifs. The roof of the shrine has decorations with over 100 kg silver. The idol in the temple faces the south thus giving it the name dakshinamurti.
