The Deva Mai Temple is located in the Katra district in India’s northernmost state, Jammu and Kashmir. The Deva Mai Temple is one of the pit stops while going on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. The Vaishno Devi temple is just about four km from the Deva Mai Temple.
It is believed that Goddess Viashno Devi meditated at this very spot where the Deva Mai temple is constructed in order to complete her life as a human during the early phases of Kalyuga. Several legends are associated to the temple. The current priests of the temple narrate a story of the ages old priest. Among Hindus, for a certain time span after the birth and death of family members, people abstain from performing daily religious rituals. In the case of the priest of the temple, when a daughter was born to his family, he too like every Brahmin abstained from entering the temple. That very same night, it is believed that he dreamt of the goddess who asked him why he wouldn’t enter the temple especially since she is born into the family as his daughter.
Surprised by the dream, the very next morning, the priest conducted a n elaborate pooja. Considering that the goddess has visited the planet as his daughter, he named her Mai Deva which roughly translates to the Divine Mother.
