Place Details:
Looking or a nice getaway far, far away from the city life, where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Konkan coastline? Head to Shiroda Beach in Vengurla, where you can catch the ocean waves and the Konkan sun undisturbed for days. Watch the sun meet the Arabian sea in this quiet haven at the southern end of Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, where you’ll find very few tourists to spoil the mood. The beach likes around 20 km from Sawantwadi and Vengurla, with a dense cover of coconut trees before the sandy stretch touching the sea. Shiroda is where V S Khandekar, the legendary Marathi laureate, once taught in a high school. In fact, the beach town has been the muse of much of his writing. It also played a role in the Indian freedom struggle. Shiroda was where a march similar to the iconic Dandi march by Mahatma Gandhi was held, under the leadership of Appasaheb Patwardhan, Achary Javadekar, Achyutrao Patwardhan and other major Marathi freedom fighters.
History aside, Shiroda has a natural beauty to it that may just unlock your own creative potential, as it did for Khandekar through much of the 20th century. With the sea on one side and coconut and cypress trees lining the other side, the beach is perfect for lazing around for hours under the Konkan sky. The best times of the day are during sunrise and sunset. Shiroda lies just 7 km from the much more popular Goa, but its culture is a unique mix of Goan and Maharashtrian. The Konkani cuisine here is another gem, with coconut-based spicy curries and a number of fish items, all prepared with fresh catch. Shiroda is around 530 km from Mumbai, and Dabolim is the airport closest to it.
