Place Details:
A small village even by Ladakh standards, Rumtse is the first human settlement on the way from Lahaul to Ladakh after Taglang Pass. It is located 70 km east of Leh and is the starting point for trek to Tso Moriri.
Rumtse lies in Rupshu Valley which lies sandwiched between Tibet, Zanskar and Ladakh. Part of the Changthang plateau, the valley is characterized by arid plains, pasturelands and snow-capped peaks. Rumtse, like the rest of Ladakh is known for its barren landscape and scenic beauty.
Locals follow Tibetan Buddhism and the Rumtse monastery holds significant influence over the locals.The monastery 108 stupas which are quite similar to those found in the Indus valley.
Rumtse is also popular among travelers for the scenic vistas it offers besides the opportunity to chance upon some of the best wildlife found in the region. Rumtse also attracts a large number of trekkers. The trek from Rumtse to Tso Moriri is very popular. The route traverses several high passes and offers scintillating views of the Himalayan landscape. The trek also offers chance to come across wild animals like marmots, wild ass and wild birds like the bar-headed geese and and the Brahminy duck.
The trek from Rumtek to Kibber is another challenging and beautiful trek. The trek is also identified as Parangla trek as it crosses the Parang La pass which is 5800 m high.
