United States: Student debt continues to act as one of the gruesome issues in the United States. The initial objective of the debt was to help students manage the finances of their education. However, it impacts the major economic decisions of students these days.

According to the latest reports, the government of Donald Trump is considering selling the federal student loans to the private market. The portfolio is of $1.6 trillion, and its segments will be sold to the private market. At present, the Department of Education oversees it. Alongside, some policies are being changed and added to the current system of loan debts.

What is a federal student debt?

A federal student debt refers to the money that one borrows from the government for education, and has to be repaid along with interest.

What are the key considerations?

The administration of Trump is focusing on selling parts of the student loan debt portfolio to the private market. According to Politico, the senior officials of the Treasury and Education Departments and the executives of the Finance industry had possible discussions on the matter of hiring an outside bank for the analysis of portfolio value. However, the proposals are not confirmed yet.

How can it impact students?

The loans that were ceased amid the pandemic of COVID-19 pandemic are being swiftly restarted. Several experts are suggesting that if the administration of Trump gives control of the portfolio to a private entity, it may not be forgiving to the loan borrowers like the federal government is.

In addition, federal debts are more transparent. On the other hand, if private companies are given control, it may lead to less transparency and accountability.
