Ghaziabad: The traffic police have categorised 18 locations in Ghaziabad that are notorious for accidents. Three of these locations are on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME). Interestingly, these three spots have made it to the list for the first time.
The three locations on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) that have recorded the highest number of accidents recently include the areas near the Udyog Kunj toll, Rasoolpur Sikroda, and the vicinity of the aeroplane restaurant. All these sites are located in Masuri, which has become a significant concern due to multiple accident-prone spots.
Additionally, out of the other 15 identified locations, three are situated on NH-9, five on state highways, and seven on the city’s internal roads.
On NH-9, blackspots include areas around Manipal Hospital in Kavi Nagar, the section between Sunderdeep College and Sadbhavna Cut, near Kaushik Dhaba, and two locations in Masuri. Other areas such as Ghukna Road in Sihani Gate, Mohan Nagar in Sahibabad, Sikri Cut in Modinagar, and Hapur Chungi in Kavi Nagar are also identified, where police are implementing strategies to reduce accidents.
Officials have stated that the survey to pinpoint blackspots is undertaken biennially. In 2022, 16 blackspots were identified. Persistent spots on this year’s list include Mohan Nagar, Ghukna, ITS, and the Ganga Canal-Ravli Road in Tiraha. The survey was conducted by traffic police in collaboration with officials from the regional transport and public works departments, encompassing locations that have recorded a minimum of 10 accidents and five fatalities within a 500-meter radius.
The survey indicates that three locations on DME were the sites of 34 accidents, resulting in 35 fatalities and 43 injuries over a two-year period. Officials report that the majority of these collisions were caused by reckless driving, while a number of pedestrians were struck by vehicles as they attempted to cross the speedway.
For this, the traffic cops have suggested that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which maintains the DME, increases the height of the divider so that people can’t scale them.
