New Delhi: While presenting the 2023-24 Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that 50 new airports, helipads, and aerodromes will be built in a bid to connect tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Uttar Pradesh, the country’s fourth-largest state in terms of land area, has 9 operational airports—Lucknow, Varanasi, Bareilly, Hindon, Agra, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur and Kushinagar.
Meanwhile, in Sonbhadra, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Chitrakoot, Shravasti, Moradabad, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Noida and Saharanpur construction work for the airport is underway.
If reports are to be believed, a new terminal will be built in Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Amausi and Prayagraj airports in the wake of the upcoming Kumbh Mela, a congregation scheduled to be held in 2025.
In other news, the government has said that domestic air traffic across country has picked up pace during the current financial year i.e. 2022-23 and is expected to reach around 97 per cent of the pre-covid level.

In a written reply to questions in the Lok Sabha on whether there has been a heavy increase in domestic air traffic in the country in recent years, Gen VK Singh said that India has witnessed a double-digit Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.5 per cent in terms of domestic passenger traffic during the period 2014-15 to 2019-20. During 2020-21 and 2021-22, there was a dip in domestic air traffic due to the impact ofCovid-19 pandemic.
