Good news for all the Aam admi party supporters out there, in the recent development of the excise policy policy case, The Supreme Court has granted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal temporary bail until June 1, which is just before the last phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Kejriwal, who leads the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with an alleged scam related to Delhi’s liquor excise policy. However, he will need to surrender to Tihar prison authorities by June 2.
A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta has directed the case. They had deferred its order on granting interim bail to Kejriwal. But, they hinted that they might grant him bail because of the elections. However, there’s a condition: if he gets bail, he can’t perform his duties as the chief minister.
On Thursday, the central law enforcement agency said in an affidavit opposing interim bail to Kejriwal that the right to campaign in an election is neither a fundamental right nor a constitutional right.
The court reminded the bench that a politician shouldn’t expect special treatment or think they’re more important than regular citizens.
In reply, the Aam Aadmi Party lodged a complaint with the Supreme Court’s registry about the ED’s affidavit. They labeled it as a clear violation of legal procedures since the issue was supposed to be discussed on Friday.
Currently the ED is investigating allegations of money laundering in the liquor policy case based on a first information report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The two central agencies claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party government changed Delhi’s liquor excise policy, which has since been discarded. They said that the changes included raising the commission for wholesalers from 5% to 12%. This allegedly made it easier for the government to receive bribes from wholesalers who had a big market share and turnover.’
