A new interim government has been set up in Bangladesh led by Nobel Laureate Md Yunus after Sheikh Hasina resigned and went to India. Md Yunus and 17 other members of the interim government took their oaths in Dhaka to restore normalcy. However, there are still concerns about the safety of minority communities, especially Hindus, in the country.
On August 9, many Hindu demonstrators protested in Dhaka against attacks on their properties. They held signs like ‘Hindu lives matter’ and ‘Save Bangladeshi Hindus,’ and showed photos of damaged Hindu homes and temples. Hindus make up about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million people and had mostly supported Hasina’s party. Hindu temples, businesses, and institutions have been targeted recently. India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar has also expressed concern about the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.
