Kavach is an automated train protection system designed to prevent collisions on the same track. It automatically stops trains to prevent collisions by using radio communication between trains and trackside equipment. With this It ensures trains operate within safe speed limits by automatically applying brakes if a train exceeds the designated speed. It prevents trains from passing red signals, which indicate that the track ahead is not clear.
Overall, Kavach aims to improve the safety and reliability of India’s railway network by using state-of-the-art technology to manage and monitor train operations.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is pushing to expand the Kavach syatem. After a high-level meeting held just days after the Bengal incident, Vaishnaw instructed railway officials to speed up the installation of Kavach 4.0. This latest version of the system is known for its ability to prevent potential disasters on the tracks.
This urgency comes as the railway ministry plans to extend Kavach’s coverage to 44,000 kilometers of track over the next five years. According to various media reports, tenders for an additional 6,000 kilometers of track will be issued by the end of the year to further improve safety measures.
