The world is shook right now, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is reportedly dead after his helicopter crashed near near Iran’s border with Azerbaijan, along with him Foreign Minister Hossein was also on board when the helicopter made a hard landing.

This has not just effected their supporters emotionally but also changed Iran’s political landscape. Raisi has been the President of Iran since August 5, 2021 and was behind the major operations executed by the country and now, with his death, the Iranian government announced that the country’s 14th presidential election will be held on June 28.

According to media reports, this decision was made during a meeting of important officials. The meeting included First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber, who is now acting as the interim President, and other important ministers.

Talking about currently scenario According to Article 131 of Iran’s Constitution, if the President cannot perform his duties, the First Vice-President takes over. The First Vice-President must then organize a new presidential election within 50 days.

At the meeting, officials set the election schedule. Candidate registration will be from May 30 to June 3. The election campaign will run from June 12 to June 27. The Constitutional Council has initially approved this timeline.

This action aims to ensure stability and continuity in Iran’s governance during this period of national mourning.

However, the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash is unlikely to cause immediate changes in Iran’s ruling system or its main policies, which are ultimately decided by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Raisi was seen as a top contender to succeed the 85-year-old supreme leader. His death makes it more likely that Khamenei’s son could eventually take on that role.

Raisi, a hard-liner and a close ally of Khamenei, became president in 2021 after the Guardian Council disqualified other prominent candidates. This led to the lowest voter turnout in the history of the Islamic Republic. He succeeded Hassan Rouhani, a moderate who served as president for eight years and defeated Raisi in the 2017 election.

Now let’s throw some light on Iran’s political structure. Iran holds regular elections for its president and parliament, and all citizens can vote. However, the supreme leader has the final say on all major policies, commands the armed forces, and controls the powerful Revolutionary Guard. The supreme leader also appoints half of the 12-member Guardian Council. This council approves candidates for the presidency, parliament, and the Assembly of Experts, which is the body that selects the supreme leader.

While the clerics are supposed to make sure the republic follows Islamic law, in reality, the supreme leader manages the government to balance different interests, promote his own priorities, and stop any challenges to the Islamic Republic or his leadership.
