In a significant show of solidarity, India has extended a helping hand to Palestinian refugees amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
On 15th July, India handed over the first installment of $2.5 million to support Palestinian refugees. This contribution underscores India’s commitment to humanitarian aid and its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause.
India paid the amount to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees. This fulfills half of India’s annual commitment of $5 million for the year 2024-25. Established in 1950, UNRWA provides direct relief and support programs for registered Palestinian refugees. The agency relies almost entirely on voluntary contributions from UN member states.
The UN agency is struggling to continue its work during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. They appreciated India’s “generous contribution” last month, especially since it came at a difficult time in Gaza. Palestinians in Gaza are suffering greatly from the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
India’s support is meant to help the agency’s core programs and services, including education, healthcare, relief, and social services for Palestinian refugees. The second part of India’s contribution was given to UNRWA by Charge d’Affaires Elizabeth Rodrigues, according to a press statement from the Representative Office of India in Palestine. New Delhi has emphasized its ongoing support for the agency’s work in the region and the services it provides to Palestinian refugees.
Earlier, on November 19, India delivered 32 tonnes of “humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine” through the El-Arish Airport in Egypt. Since 2018, India has given $30 million to UNRWA.
India has been a consistent supporter of the Palestinian cause since the early days of its own independence. In 1947, India was one of the few countries to oppose the United Nations’ partition plan for Palestine. And now by extending their hands towards the Palestinian refugees India has took this relationship to another level.
